Reporting to the Vice President – Head of IT, the Associate Director, IT Operations will be responsible for the strategic management, oversight, and continuous improvement of IT operations within the organization. This leadership role requires both technical expertise and strong managerial skills to effectively collaborate across departments, ensuring optimal systems, networks, and security measures. The ideal candidate will have experience managing IT functions in a regulated environment (preferably in biotech or life sciences) and a strong ability to align IT operations with corporate objectives.
This role is based in our Waltham, MA headquarters. Our office-based employees are required to work in the office three (3) days a week.
Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
- Lead the day-to-day operations of Viridian’s network, storage, security, and cloud infrastructure ensuring high standards of reliability, availability, and performance
- Manage and mature our external IT service desk, ensuring mutually defined SLAs are achieved and continuously improved
- Manage system configurations, software installations, updates, and upgrades to Windows servers, applications, and other infrastructure systems
- Oversee the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, upgrade, and support of security systems, servers, desktop devices, IT operation applications, networks, and the service desk
- Monitor system performance and availability, proactively taking steps to maximize uptime and performance across both cloud and on-premises environments
- Develop and maintain strong vendor relationships, including contract negotiation, performance management, and ensuring vendors meet agreed-upon service levels
- Collaborate with the Head of IT to continue to develop the IT operational strategy to align with the company’s growth and business goals
- Develop capacity plans and budgets that meet the growth, scalability, and changing needs of the business, optimizing costs across cloud and on-premises infrastructure
- Maintain a high level of infrastructure uptime in a fast-paced environment, ensuring business continuity and disaster recovery plans are in place and tested
- Develop, implement, and maintain IT policies and procedures based on industry-standard best practices, SOX, FDA, and GxP requirements
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand and meet their IT infrastructure needs, particularly in support of Commercial Launch readiness
- Stay current on emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation in IT operations
- Continuously assess the effectiveness of IT operations and implement best practices for process improvements
- Identify opportunities to automate or streamline IT functions, enhancing overall operational efficiency
Qualifications:
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, ITIL) preferred) with a minimum of 8 years of IT Operations experience, with at least 4 years in a leadership role in a biotech, life sciences, or regulated industry
- Strong knowledge of IT operations, including cloud infrastructure, data management, security protocols, and networking
- Hands-on experience with regulatory compliance (e.g., HIPAA, FDA, GxP) is highly desirable
- In-depth knowledge of IT best practices, including security, system administration, and ITIL framework
- Ability to align IT strategies with organizational goals and priorities
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities with a strong attention to detail
- Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proven mindset of proactive continuous improvement
- Efficient independent worker with ability to focus and drive for results
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple tasks
- Strong commitment to ethical standards
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.)
- Ability to travel up to 10%
- The salary range for this position is commensurate with experience
