Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs, the Senior Director, Field Medical Affairs, will develop and execute a global scientific engagement strategy with the goal of establishing Viridian as an innovator in immunotherapy with a strong commitment to the rare disease community. This individual will provide input into the strategic medical plan that supports the safe and effective use of our medicines by patients, physicians and payers. This player-coach will also be responsible for building and managing a team of Global Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), creating opportunities for their professional growth, and maintaining a culture of inclusion, transparency and comradery.
The successful candidate will partner with cross-functional teams within Viridian to support—and at times drive—key strategic initiatives relative to R&D, Scientific Advisory Boards, Speaker Bureaus, and others as needed. The Senior Director of Field Medical Affairs will often be the voice of Field Medical Affairs in strategic interactions with clinical development, operations, commercial, market access, and competitive intelligence. Finally, as a member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team, this individual will play a key role in shaping the overall Medical Affairs strategy, building a fully integrated Medical Affairs function.
This role may be based in Waltham, MA, which would be a hybrid role, or it can also be fully remote. Our office-based employees are required to work in the office three (3) days a week. If remote, travel to headquarters for meetings would be required at the discretion of management.
Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
- Ensure all activities and interactions comply with Viridian’s business guidance, policies, SOPs, Office of Inspector General (OIG), Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) guidelines and policies
- Develop and execute a global field scientific engagement strategy
- Build, lead and mentor Global MSL team
- Maintain a strong partnership with the vendor assisting in the management of the EX-US MSL team
- Lead the strategy for key thought leader development and fostering strong relationships with regional and national and global immunology experts that manage TED patients to provide input into planning, initiatives, and requests for thought leader information
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with key external stakeholders (medical experts, academic institutions, medical societies, managed care organizations, and patient advocacy groups)
- Partner with clinical development and operations teams to facilitate clinical trial enrollment
- Develop a systematic approach to ensuring field insight are gathered, shared and acted upon
- Engage in appropriate collaboration with the region sales and access teams to share geographical and healthcare provider information within compliance boundaries
- Drive scientific engagement initiatives in support of commercialization efforts
- Partner with marketing to provide support for training, content development, and ongoing strategic management of the Speaker Bureau and speaker content
- Provide scientific input relative to evidence generation activities within Medical Affairs and across the organization
- Actively participate in review of Externally Sponsored Research requests
- Oversee congress initiatives in support of KOL engagements
Requirements
- Requires an MD, PharmD, or PhD or other doctoral degree in a biological science or equivalent training and experience with 15+ years of experience building relationships with national, regional, and local thought leaders, medical providers, associations and advocacy groups
- Requires at least 5 years of experience managing global MSL teams
- Rare disease experience preferred, but not required
- Demonstrable global executive leadership experience in Medical Affairs in a pharmaceutical/biotech industry
- Experience in global product launches
- Good understanding of the global regulations governing Medical Affairs activities as well as detailed knowledge of relevant medical practices and treatment paradigms
- Advanced understanding of clinical medicine, clinical pharmacology, and associated disciplines (e.g. biostatistics) and drug development principles
- Demonstrated ability to maintain scientific credibility while being commercially supportive
- Ability to rapidly pivot based on evolving corporate strategy and direction
- Fluent in translating insights gleaned from external interactions into transformative initiatives that drive patient-centric improvements to our strategy, products or pipeline
- Experience engaging a range of stakeholders, including physicians, other clinicians, patients, and payers, in scientific exchange
- Demonstrated success working cross-functionally with colleagues from regulatory, legal, commercial, market access, clinical and development
- Experience developing a wide range of materials and initiatives to support scientific engagement
- Established track record of communicating scientific publications and presentations
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and virtual communication tools
- Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate complex scientific information
- Motivated, disciplined, proactive individual capable of effectively managing timelines
- Strong commitment to ethical standards
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.)
- Ability to travel up to 50%
